Old-time big-famous bar and restaurant tucked away just off Plaza Cataluña. A must-see for many tourists although still a great, relatively quiet place for good food in an elegant atmosphere. The list of famous guests from Barcelona’s heyday as a cultural centre is long and distinguished, including Picasso, Albeniz, Granados, Gaudí and Rusiñol among others.
The interior is quirky and the walls studded with doodles by famous regulars, with occasional live piano music adding to the chic yet slightly off-centre vibe.
Great food, with classic dishes lovingly reproduced and updated. Menú del día comes in at a posh but worthwhile €15.97 and is highly recommended. Otherwise, there are plenty of great raciones (big tapas) from around €7-8 and plates of torrades (little open sandwiches) from €7.
