What’s that? You want to have a cocktail in central Palma de Mallorca while listening to Vivaldi and watching an open fire roar? Well now you can, thanks to the magnificent Bar Abaco. You flippin’ diva.
Slap bang in the middle of the Lonja (aka Llotja) area of the Balearics’ biggest city, Abaco’s owners have made wonderful use of the baroque-era C’an Marcial mansion, even naming the place after a particularly pretty aspect of the building’s architecture. Think sculptures made of flowers, old paintings, lavish antiques adorned with fruit and enormous piles of fresh fruit dotted around the bar and you are on the right tracks. We could imagine Dalí feeling right at home somewhere between the cherub wearing grapes and the pile of coconuts.
Since opening in 1981, Abaco has become one of the must-see nightspots in Palma and occupies a prime spot downtown, close to the soaring Llotja cultural centre, Es Baluard gallery and the marina.
For warm summer nights, Abaco also has a large terrace. Drinks are pricey, but cocktails are pitch-perfect renditions of classic recipes. Service is excellent, especially considering the number of baffled tourists who come to gawp at the fortified front door.
