Gusto Guides loves Ciutadella. The old capital of Menorca has a fascinating history, the people are friendly and a fistful of the world’s best beaches within an hour’s drive. But there is one thing that we love about Ciutadella as much as any of those things – La Margarete.
Yes, yes. We know. We have written lots about the fantastic tapas at Can Rafa and the excellent traditional cuisine at La Guitarra (in the old town) or Tolo and his team of seafood wizards at Restaurante Des Port down on the harbour.
But we hadn’t talked about La Margarete – until now (and we admit, it was because it took us a while to get our heads around what exactly this place is). In a hidden corner of the old town, this little bar is a delightful surprise: look for a fairly non-descript door in a whitewashed wall and prepare to be amazed.
Behind that unremarkable door lies an indoor bar and a garden enclosed by old sandstone walls and shaded by tall trees.
This is the ideal place to enjoy a drink after dinner – think local gin under the stars. This is also a good place to catch a number of this little town’s outdoor cultural events (think book launches and live music), as well as morning yoga classes in summer.
For techies, the bar has good wifi and if it rains, there’s always the indoor bar to while away the hours with the happy waiting staff.
The only downside (particularly for early birds) is the late opening time – at weekends the bar opens after 21.30 in the evening, and after 10 during the week.
