Here at Gusto Guides we love Menorca, and especially the island’s old capital Ciutadella. We try to spend at least a few days in this beautiful sandstone town each year to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, friendly welcome and lovely 16th- and 17th-century stone buildings (marés in Menorquín), not forgetting the local food, traditional fish market and tapas bars, as well as the superb beaches nearby.
But this year, we came up with a new reason to return: the Hotel Tres Sants. Opened in 2010 on one of Ciutadella’s prettiest backstreets, the hotel is just a stone’s throw away from the old cathedral and a couple of minutes’ stroll from the harbour.
We loved Tres Sants for its authentic, unpretentious atmosphere: think bohemian luxury with rustic Menorquin touches throughout. The hotel has only 8 rooms, but each is individually designed and almost guaranteed to make the visitor gasp with delight. The dreamy decor is a mix of frothy four-poster beds, airy white rooms and hardwood furniture with oriental accents that work deliciously with the building itself, a former mansion built around a high interior courtyard and twisting up to that roof terrace high above the rest of the town. José, who runs the hotel, is a great source of (seemingly all) knowledge about the island.
The owners of the hotel also run a number of apartments in Ciutadella, as well as the hotel Albranca. Reserve well in advance, especially if you are hoping to stay at the Hotel Tres Sants during high season or fiestas.
The team behind Tres Sants also help to organize the cultural programme that sees music, film and art brought to the stone auditoria at Lithica every summer – ask at the hotel for details. Like we said, José knows everything (including how to catch an octopus with your bare hands. He is our hero).
Stepping in from the street, the reception area (in contrast to many hotel receptions that seem to have a sense of foreboding and stress built in between the luggage room and the front desk) is an oasis of calm. Candles, soft jazz, white upholstery. The feeling carries through into the hotel rooms, most of which are a good size (often with separate sitting area) and have lots of nice places to curl up with a book or while away a hot afternoon gazing out onto the street. If you thought it couldn’t get any more relaxing, there is also a wellness centre in the hotel basement with steam room and a small swimming pool, as well as an in-room massage service. Rooms cost between €110 and €225 per night depending on the season.
